For classes featuring watercolor pencil painting instruction, watercolor pencils, paper and paintbrushes will be supplied for in-class painting, but students must bring their own supplies for out-of-class painting assignments.
For journaling classes, students are asked to bring unlined journals in which to create their out-of-class journal pages. They may bring a journal-in-progress if desired.
There is a supply fee of $15 for all workshops. Students in Field Sketching and Rendering for Amateur and Professional Naturalists and Researchers Workshops are also required to purchase the textbook Illustrating Nature ~ Right-brain Art in a Left-brain World.
Additional days are not simply repeats of previous days, since new techniques or outdoor activities are offered on the additional days. Outdoor activities should only be planned during parts of the year when good weather can be expected. However, suitable indoor resources (greenhouse, museum exhibits, or other indoor drawing possibilities), which can be substituted in case of inclement weather, might make a workshop with scheduled outdoor sketching possible year-round. These workshops are suitable for adults and motivated children 12 and up, with a maximum of 18 students per class so that everyone can receive personal attention as needed. Irene provides all supplies used in the class, including paper, graphite pencils, erasers, blenders, brushes, a wide array of watercolor pencils, objects to sketch and other supplies. When a workshop description specifically includes out-of-class sketching assignments, participants should bring their own supplies. Participants take home the valuable sketching, landscape drawing and watercolor pencil technique guides written and illustrated by the artist and used by the student during the course of the workshop.
