Completed painting  Amazing Night Lights on Canal in Wuxi China
This 5 foot painting is of a lovely area is within walking distance of my daughter's apartment in Wuxi where she worked  until mid 2013.
Below is the original photo I took of the area.
Amazing night lights in
                                          Wuxi
I created the large painting at Shatford Studio during the winter
and here is the original scene.

In October 2013 I journeyed back to China for my 9th time to plein air paint and visit my daughter who was teaching in China then in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It really helps that Kelsey is an avid painter and was happy to accompany me yet again for a short break to lovely Shangli village not far from Ya'an and very close to Bifengxia with its pandas and wonderful canyon and world's highest scenic tourist elevator to a wonderful canyon. We had a lProf.Wu at home at

Kelsey and I painted a view of the bridge.  I met up again with my dear friend Prof. Tommy Wu and his wife at their home in Music Gardens, a suburb of Chengdu.  We had a lovely visit with them and I returned to the neat tourist town of Huanglongxi. I will be dedicating one issue soon to stories of my trips painting in China in the last several years.  Check out the movie of this most recent trip to paint in China in October of 2013as I returned to China twice in 2013.

Here is my setup when I am painting back at Nanshan Temple in Wuxi in 2012.  Kelsey's holiday was over and they were back to work.  I was lucky and got to return to "work" painting!   I got to enjoy more great lights along the canal at one of its many  fine bridges.

I will also return to the Phoenix Private Art Museum to check out their display of wonderful contemporary Chinese artwork and will also be be looking to see if they have completed the neighbouring artist' studios.  I am hoping that one day I might visit and paint here.  I was told to check it out by the Staff at the Phoenix art Company where I met the head product designer and an assistant who spoke English.  She gave me wonderful tour of the magnificent private collection of contemporary art at the factory.   The  Phoenix  Art Supply company is the 2nd largest art company in the world.  The staff were curious as to why I came to China to paint.

Professor Wu Sculpting
They were surprised to hear that I had travelled to Beijing originally in 1987 and through the kind assistance of Prof. Wu had  studied privately at the Central Academy of Fine Arts with a few renowned artists Prof. Wei and Yang Feiyun, who is now one of the top selling Chinese Contemporary artists according to Sotheby's Auction House.  He had just recently been in Wuxi for the opening of the Phoenix Art Museum.

                                            Arts
I was very fortunate
Yang Feiyun  painted a lovely oil portrait of me back in 1987.

The staff were amazed that I had artwork by him. I also have a lovely watercolour of his wife Pengpeng.  She was often a subject in his oil paintings and modeled in my class.  Back in 1987 I was really disappointed I had to cancel out on a visit that I had arranged for famous American actor Gregory Peck to meet with these wonderful artists.I met Mr.Peck at lunch one day in the fall of '87 at the new Great Wall Sheraton Hotel when he travelled to China for the Education Film festival.. Unfortunately I had to cancel our appointment because in those days you couldn't easily make travel arrangements and my train was booked to Qingdao and my ship was sailing for Shanghai during the only time when Mr. Peck could come.  That story will have to be subject to another post along with pictures of Yang Feiyan's wonderful work that he had me take as he was hoping that I could help him market his work in North America but unfortunately events in China took a turn and that stopped us from doing anything on that front--now Sotheby's is doing a fine job with some of his work commanding a million dollars!

I have always loved to plein airpaint, in the outdoors, where ever I travel in Canada, Mexico, China, France and Italy to realize my goal of gaining  mastery of the oil medium led to my setting a plein air painting groups where ever I travel and live.  I have been organizing plein air outings in northern BC and Alaska for over 10 years.  I started the Penticton Plein Air Painting group 5 years ago and was almost immediately joined by Nel Witteman. We still often meet on Thursdays, especially when I am in town and during poor weather meet to pain at t inside our local arts centre, Shatford Centre. I have now started spending time in the cooler weather in Puerto Vallarta.  I am often down there painting with many like minded artists during the winter and the group will be going out whenever there are interested artists available.  Check out their facebook page here to see if anyone is painting en plein air here.   The groups have been a tremendous success over the years with many happy hours outside with great friends and our paint brushes.  I think that residents of the South Okanagan, Stewart and now Puerto Vallarta are bumping into us outside painting all the time We welcome everyone, from beginners to professionals to get out and paint.   We met many wonderful local artists as well as out of town visitors who joined our outings, meeting artists from across Canada and around the world.   Shatford Centre.  The group which is normally free when going outdoors but will pay a fee to the Shatford centre for letting us use their space if we need to go inside in Penticton.

While Angie will be away up north please join the southern group to paint if you are in the Okanagan or plan a painting trip to Stewart BC and Hyder Alaska in August.  If you are travelling to Mexico why not contact me to go out and paint in the Puerto Vallarta area.

Stay tuned for future stories about many of these wonderful journeys!  And, if you have time, why don't you come out and paint with us--it's open to artists of all levels and ages.  Check out the listing on PleinAirBC.com

*Penticton Plein Air Painters is sometimes meeting again this spring, often at Shatford Centre Mondays and Thursday's during their open studio times and there will be a small charge for this ($5 for members)
During better weather later this spring we will start meeting at Riverside Mall  at the North End of Penticton BC, Canada.  Everyone is welcome to this free group*. If no one else shows up and you are uncomfortable going out to paint alone, you can always go downtown and paint along Front Street near Lloyd Gallery and Dragons Den Art Supply Store.  You can get more information about our group from Lloyd Gallery!
*There may be a charge if due to unsightly weather the group goes indoors to work at Shatford Community Arts Centre.

ART RETREAT OF THE NORTH

**NEW** for 2017.  Angie will teach her Pillars of Painting 3 day workshop in Stewart August 5-7, 2017.  This will be a studio painting course at the studio.  The tuition will be $300 but there will be a discount for local Stewart residents for $200.  All artists, workshop participants and non-participants are welcome to join in some outdoor painting for free before and after the workshop.

Artist Angie McIntosh has created a simple rustic painting studio in an old house in Stewart BC which is near some of the most scenic painting locations of Western Canada and  Alaska, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.  In the summer of 2008 artists from all around gathered together to paint in this amazing inspiring location and join McIntosh for a painting retreat. Read about the first Bear Festival in 2007. Other galleries of painting in Stewart have been included and in future there will be more.   It is wonderful to be in the north in the summer and early fall to paint. And winter in the north is a snowy wonderland.  If you wish to participate next year contact McIntosh .  Remember the wonderful old days when Group of Seven artists inspired each other on painting trips to the Canadian countryside?  Angie was also inspired by walking through Renoir's home in southern France. The comraderie and inspiration felt and created by the artists who met at Renoir's home must have been amazing.  Seeing the art works left in the rooms by his artist friends who would visit and paint moved her and so she is trying to create a similar environment right here in northern BC.  Click here to learn about joining McIntosh as an artist in residence at her art retreat in Stewart, BC, in northern Canada, minutes from Alaska.  Please note that the Art Retreat of the North is not available for commercial rental or as a B&B--it is Angie's place of art and creativity.  If you wish to work there or join other artists there you must contact Angie first.  Email or phone in Canada 250 809-7932.
